it’s surprisingly hard to keep a smile off her lips, so she elects to drop her gaze and face forward, though she pauses a moment to see all his sharp edges dissolve into a smile aimed right at her. ❛ yeah, a little, ❜ a tone illuminated with laughter agrees. his question brings about a more pensive expression, however. she truly takes a moment to consider it and gives an honest answer. ❛ well, the simple ones — the ones like the one from tuesday — are funny; they’re easy — like you said, but there’s such a sense of… of SATISFACTION that comes when you solve a bigger case, like when you finally slide the last puzzle piece into place, you know ? and you can finally see the whole picture. ❜
michael waits for her answer, the perfect image of patience as his gaze tracks the way amusement shifts to contemplation on her features. she seems to be really considering the question, and he finds himself actually INTERESTED to hear what she will say next. “ not a bad answer, neighbor. but what about the ones where you’ve been unable to find that last piece of the puzzle for a while now? ” was his crew one with a missing puzzle piece for her and her team? he’s playing with fire here, surely — what idiot willingly draws attention from someone in law enforcement when they have illegal activities going on almost nightly? arrogance will one day be his own downfall. but he enjoys it too much to QUIT, and instead continues to tease the flames. “ that must drive you crazy, right? ”
“it wasn’t me!” ella stated, as if it wasn’t his wallet hanging from the small girl’s sticky fingers. despite only being seven, ella often roamed freely around the town, though this time, she was on her own sort of mission. “i just found it.”
“ you might’ve been born yesterday — literally, even — but i wasn’t. ” eyes narrow in annoyance as he speaks, flickering between the scraggly kid and his wallet. he’s been bested by a small child at his own damn game. “ if you’re gonna steal something, you really need to get some better excuses. ”
❝ Listen, I need you to do a job for me. I would do it myself, but the target already saw me once. Think you can get past a Brinks Home Security System & a SentrySafe Model SFW123BUC?❞ Robin’s contacts had put her onto the man before her, recommending him highly. He looks fairly young, but she’s sure he has the talent though she asks if he’s capable. She honestly needs copies of what’s in that safe or her entire case will fall apart.
“ — yeah, EASY. ” The words are a confident declaration that spill from his lips, followed closely by a grin that betrays none of his uncertainty. He’s sure he can figure it out — his record isn’t nearly flawless for nothing. “ What exactly is it that you need me to get from there? And please tell me it’s something interesting for once…my last few jobs have been rather boring. ”
When he had been signed on, they had promised him in writing that they would do their best not to send him out on dangerous jobs. He had Kailani to take care of after all which meant that he couldn’t be gone for long periods of time. Sometimes though, it couldn’t be helped when they needed the extra man. Khai had gotten back only that morning, but he had spent the rest of the day alternating between hopping in the shower to let the hot water rinse away the blood and soothe his muscles and sitting in front of the TV with a beer in his hands. He hadn’t been expecting Michael to come bursting through his door unannounced, but that was likely the point. The big man just looked up at him with a blank expression on his face. “I know I look like fucking hell.” For a man with a daughter, he had never lost the dirty mouth. “Not pretending, but doesn’t mean I want to talk about it.”
he helps himself to the couch beside the other without so much as an invitation, gracefully stretching tired limbs out as he makes himself comfortable. “ i hope by now you know me well enough to know i won’t stop until i get an answer, so you might as well just skip the bullshit and tell me now. ” an amused smirk settles onto his features, but the humor doesn’t quite reach his eyes as he tilts his head in the other’s direction. concern bubbles just under the surface as he waits, but he carefully masks it behind easy jokes. “ i would offer to just go beat them up in your honor, but if they did that to YOU, then i really don’t want to know what they would do to this pretty face of mine. ”
her eyebrows furrow, a look of confusion settling on her face at the fact that he seems to be really disappointed in what she had said. “vine is DEAD, michael. you have to get over it and move on.” her eyes roll, head falling back against the cushion of the couch the two of them are currently sat on. “why’d you have to bring michael jordan into it, huh? where is the correlation?? and to answer your question, no i wouldn’t. he’s taller than me and that’s intimidating.”
“ just because you don’t want to allow the JOY they bring into your life doesn’t mean others can’t, ” he huffs, dramatically rolling his eyes in return to her. “ come on, keep up! OBVIOUSLY it’s because michael jordan is the king of basketball or whatever, and i’m practically the king of vines. i thought that comparison would be fairly easy to catch onto, but i GUESS i should’ve expected this from a dirty, filthy vine hater. ”
